Quick Answer

  • Black dragons only appear on the shadow route: climb the tallest tree at the fork in the forest and, if a third option to follow a shadow appears, take it.
  • The shadow leads to a Blue first. Hold still and lower your eyes; let it pass to keep looking for the Black.
  • When the Black appears, players who bonded it say hold its gaze and do not bow.
  • The shadow option is random. If it does not appear, that run cannot reach a Black.

§1 How Black Dragons Work

In the Fourth Wing books, black dragons are the rarest and most dangerous breed. Tairn, who bonds Violet, is a black morningstartail. Dragonkind keeps that rarity. Most players bond a Red, Green, Brown or Orange, and the r/fourthwing moderators state there is no specific way to get a Black or Blue; it is luck and randomness.

Luck does not mean you can go anywhere, though. Every Black bond players have shared went through the same place: the top of the tallest tree, at the fork in the forest. If you take the valley center route instead, you can still meet a Blue in the meadow, but not a Black.

§2 The Shadow Option

After about an hour of walking you reach the fork in the forest. Choose find the tallest tree and climb for a better view. From the top you see branches swaying as dragons prowl below and a large green in the nearest clearing. Normally you get two choices: climb down slowly to pursue the green, or descend quickly.

On some runs a third option appears: follow a shadow passing overhead. This option is the random gate. One player who tested across many accounts put it plainly: the color of the other bonds follows your choices, but the Blue and Black encounter depends on whether the shadow appears when you climb the tree.

No shadow option? Then this run cannot reach a Black. Many players treat it as a scouting run: finish it for another color, or pick something risky and accept the 4-hour reset.

§3 Black Dragon Route

This is the route the clearest Black-bond report on r/fourthwing describes, combined with other successful players. Steps before the tree may vary, since other Black riders entered with squadmates and still got there.

  1. Enter the valley alone and head toward the center. Single report
  2. Survive the first dragon by lowering your eyes (bow to the red, or bow and turn to face the brown).
  3. At the scream: help → assess the situation → engage, then let your squadmate decide the bullies' fate.
  4. Continue deeper toward the center, then climb the tallest tree.
  5. If it appears, follow the shadow. ★ This is the luck step.
  6. You meet a Blue. Commit to following her, then hold still and bow, and ignore the injured cadet for now.
  7. Once the Blue leaves, wrap the cadet's wounds and continue south.
  8. Look back toward the sound. The Black appears.
  9. Hold the Black's gaze. Do not bow. → Black bond

A second Black rider shared a different early path: west twice, helped the cadet against the larger bully, let the squadmate take revenge, helped a screaming cadet and wrapped a burn, then chose to hope for the best and finally face the threat and hold its gaze. Both reports agree on the ending: meet the Black's eyes.

Not everyone survives the Black. Players report reaching it and still being burned, and one couple described choosing between a Blue and a Black and losing both. Treat every step as risky.

§4 How to Get a Blue Dragon

Blues are easier to find than Blacks but harder to bond. There are two known places to meet one:

  • The shadow route. The Blue is the first dragon you meet after following the shadow. Players who bonded her say to hold still and bow. Several who held her gaze and advanced, or tried to help the injured cadet, were burned. Player reports
  • The meadow. After passing on the red at the valley center, a Blue sometimes appears as a third option next to the Orange and Brown. The community chart notes it appears more often if you killed the bullies earlier. Community-mapped

The community chart has no confirmed successful Blue bond yet. Choosing lower gaze, halt advance got testers burned. Treat Blue routes as the least certain on this site.

§5 How Many Tries Does It Take?

Reports vary widely. One player saw the shadow option for the first time on their 16th attempt; another bonded their Black on the 26th. Some players spotted a Blue twice in fourteen runs and died both times. With a 4-hour cooldown after every death, expect a Black to take days, not hours.

Rebecca Yarros reportedly also said that roughly one in ten cadets will not be bonded no matter what they choose, so a run can fail even when you do everything right.

§6 Tips to Save Time

  • Check for the shadow early. The tree is your scouting point. No third option means no Black this run.
  • Do not throw away safe progress for nothing. If you have no shadow, consider finishing the run for a reliable Red or a Green instead.
  • Write your choices down. Because outcomes have a random element, a log of what you picked makes it easier to repeat a lucky run.
  • Do not rely on email tricks. Players report the site has blocked the "+alias" email workaround for creating extra attempts.

§ FAQ

Is there a guaranteed way to get a black dragon in Dragonkind?

No. The r/fourthwing moderators state there is no specific way to get a Black or Blue dragon; it comes down to luck. What you can control is being in the right place when the random shadow option appears.

No player we have found reports a Black dragon outside the tree and shadow route. Blue dragons, however, can also appear in the meadow beside the Orange and Brown.

Do black dragons exist in Dragonkind?

Yes. Several players on r/fourthwing have posted Black bonds, and black lineages such as Dubhmadinn and Moerlaighen appear in the community list.
