Quick Answer

  • Yes — the official Fourth Wing game is Dragonkind, and you play it free in your browser at dragonkind.com.
  • It is a choose-your-own-adventure: five or more decision scenes, and any scene can end your run.
  • Die and you are locked out for 4 hours before you can try again.
  • It is not Dragonkin: The Banished, the unrelated action RPG on Steam and consoles.

§1 Is There an Official Fourth Wing Game?

Yes — and it is called Dragonkind. It is the official online game set in the world of Fourth Wing, and you play it free in your browser at dragonkind.com. There is no download, no app, and no purchase: you sign in with an email code, enter the Rider's Quadrant, and face Threshing — the same trial Violet goes through in the books.

If you searched for a Fourth Wing game and landed on a page about a downloadable action RPG, you are in the wrong place. More on that mix-up below.

§2 What the Fourth Wing Game Is (Dragonkind)

Dragonkind is operated by Yarros Ink, Rebecca Yarros's own studio, and it launched alongside her new book, Threshing Day (Empyrean 3.5). Unlike a limited-time promo that disappears after a launch weekend, the game is a permanent fixture on the site — the story is not on a timer, so you can play it weeks or months after release.

The premise is lifted straight from the novels. In Fourth Wing, cadets at Basgiath War College present themselves to the dragons on Threshing Day; if a dragon does not choose them, they climb back down the mountain — or they don't climb back down at all. Dragonkind turns that single, terrifying morning into something you do yourself, one decision at a time.

§3 How to Play Fourth Wing Online

Getting in is simple. You enter your email and confirm with a code — no password, no account to build. From there the site assigns you to a Wing, a Section, and a Squad, the same hierarchy the cadets live under at Basgiath. Once you're placed, you move through the Rotunda hub and out to the Threshing Valley, where the actual choice-making begins.

Everything runs in the browser, on desktop or phone. There is nothing to install and no minimum spec to worry about. For the full step-by-step walkthrough — every scene, every choice and the death cooldown — see our full step-by-step walkthrough.

§4 Threshing: Choose Your Own Adventure

This is the core of the game. Threshing plays out as a choose-your-own-adventure sequence with five or more decision scenes. At each one you pick a path — where to climb, whether to move toward a dragon or hold still, which of several options to take — and the game reacts.

And it is genuinely possible to die. Any scene can end your run, and when you die you are locked out for a 4-hour cooldown before you can try again. That cooldown is deliberate. Rebecca Yarros has said she nearly set it to 24 hours before settling on the shorter window, so players can take another run the same day.

Treat every scene as one you can lose. The players who bond a dragon are usually the ones who read the scene text instead of clicking the first option. Curious how closely the game follows the novels? We compare Threshing in the books vs the game in a separate guide.

§5 Your Dragon Card: Colors, Tails & Lineages

Survive to the end and a dragon bonds with you. Your reward is a dragon card that records the identity of your dragon: a unique name, one of six colors, one of the tail types, its gender, its age, and its lineage.

The numbers behind those cards are large. By Rebecca Yarros's own account, the game combines six colors with every tail type for 30 possible dragons, draws from over 135,000 unique dragon names, and — most importantly — she personally wrote every path through the game. Nothing in the branching structure was generated and left unchecked; the author of the books is the author of the routes.

If you want to know what the colors and tails actually mean, we break down every type on our guide to all dragon colors, tails and lineages.

§6 Does the Same Choice Always Give the Same Dragon?

Not necessarily — and this is the single most common question players ask after comparing runs.

Players have reported arriving at the same outcome with different choices, and different outcomes from the same choices. That points to an element of randomness sitting underneath the decision tree: your path shapes the range of dragons you can meet, but it may not fully determine which one you get. Several long threads across the Fourth Wing community have compared results and reached the same general observation.

We are deliberately not calling this a confirmed mechanic. The community evidence is consistent but it is community evidence. What we can say with confidence is that replaying is part of the design — the game expects you to go back through Threshing more than once. For a closer look at how the quiz routes you and how people are trying to steer it — including whether your choices are random — see our quiz guide.

§7 Fourth Wing Game vs Dragonkin: The Banished

One warning, because this trips up a lot of people.

Dragonkind is not Dragonkin: The Banished. They are two completely unrelated products whose names differ by a single letter.

Dragonkin: The Banished is a paid action RPG made by Eko Software and published by Nacon, sold on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation — a separate game with no connection to Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing, or the Empyrean series. If you are looking for the official Fourth Wing experience, you want Dragonkind at dragonkind.com, not the ARPG.

Is the Fourth Wing game free to play?

Yes. There is no purchase, no download, and no app. You sign in with an email verification code and start playing.

Do you always get the same dragon from the same choices?

Based on community reports, not always — the same choices have produced different results, which suggests some randomness under the decision paths. Rebecca Yarros wrote every route, and the six colors combine with the tail types into 30 possible dragons.

How long is the cooldown if you die?

Four hours. Rebecca Yarros has said she considered 24 hours before choosing the shorter window.
